How to do a brain dump that actually helps

  1. Set a short timer. Three minutes is enough for most days.
  2. Dump without sorting. Tasks next to feelings next to random ideas. Don’t fix anything yet.
  3. Sort into buckets. To-dos, worries, ideas, feelings. The tool does this for you.
  4. Pick one first step. Then decide what to schedule, delegate, drop or park.

Questions

What is a brain dump?+

A brain dump is getting everything in your head onto a page (or out loud) without filtering it: tasks, worries, ideas, feelings. Once it is outside your head you can sort it and decide what actually needs you.

How long should a brain dump take?+

Three to ten minutes is plenty. Keep going until you run out, then sort. A short timer stops it from becoming a planning session.

Is my brain dump private?+

Your text is saved only in this browser. When you press "Sort", the text is sent to our server and our AI provider to be organized; we don’t keep a copy. Avoid including passwords or other sensitive data.

Can I do a brain dump by talking?+

Yes. In supported browsers tap the microphone to dictate. If you like talking it out, the ThinkAloud app is built for exactly that, with reflections and follow-up questions after each entry.
